Research Projects

Short blurb introducing areas of research and locations

Soundholo

A digital design tool for designers to dynamically add audio output to physical objects in space without the need for speakers embedded within these objects. This technology generates, positions, and moves 3D sound sources in space in response to people’s actions and object movements. This technology combines Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) and Motion Tracking using a Digital Twin interface for integration, control, and visualization.

Imageholo

A digital design tool for designers to dynamically add visual output to physical objects in space without the need for screens embedded within these objects. This technology projects images to physical surfaces in motion within spaces in response to people’s actions. This technology combines Dynamic Projection Mapping and Motion Tracking using a Digital Twin interface for integration, control, and visualization.

Short blurb describing teaching experience, student level, etc

Environments Studio

This studio is a hands-on and project-based course for students to learn the foundations for designing spatial-interactive experiences in middle-sized settings, such as museums, learning environments, and libraries. The students learn to analyze spaces, integrate technology for collective, time-based, and distributed interactions, and use drawings, renders, and scale models to ideate, represent, and communicate the spaces they are designing. In class, we practice in-situ observations and interviews while sketching ideas, exploring new technologies, and iterating our designs. The main goal of this studio is to introduce students to the emerging field of space-based Interaction Design, showing them how they can shape spaces and technologies together to create design solutions that improve people’s daily experiences in their homes, neighborhoods, and cities.
